Legislative Forum: Gretna

Gretna Fire Station

Today at 7:30 AM  members of the Government Affairs Committee of the Sarpy Chamber and Gretna met to listen to Senator Kitner at the Gretna Volunteer Fire Department on 168th Street.

Senator Kitner covered the following:

LB 407 School Funding
LB 44 Juvenile Sentencing
Death Penalty

He is opposed to removing the death penalty but is in favor of increasing the burden of evidence for proof. This includes the use of DNA to convict and two witnesses.

Supreme Court to Hear Voting Rights Act Case

Today,  the Supreme Court will hear Shelby County v. Holder. The issue as stated in the SCOTUS blog link below is,

“Whether Congress’ decision in 2006 to reauthorize Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act under the pre-existing coverage formula of Section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act exceeded its authority under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments and thus violated the Tenth Amendment and Article IV of the United States Constitution. “

This has the potential to affect attempts in Nebraska for photo id voters registration.
